There are now more than 234 million debit cards in use in the USA, generating more than $60 billion of sales each month. During the first three months of this year, VISA and MasterCard produced U.S. gross dollar volume on signature debit cards of $186.9 billion, compared to $157.4 billion for 1Q/04, an 18.7% gain. VISA posted first quarter signature debit card volume of $144.0 billion, while MasterCard reported $42.9 billion.
