
There are now more than 234 million debit cards in use in the USA, generating more than $60 billion of sales each month. During the first three months of this year, VISA and MasterCard produced U.S. gross dollar volume on signature debit cards of $186.9 billion, compared to $157.4 billion for 1Q/04, an 18.7% gain. VISA posted first quarter signature debit card volume of $144.0 billion, while MasterCard reported $42.9 billion. During 2004, VISA racked up $542 billion in signature debit card gross dollar volume, giving the network a solid 79% share of the U.S. market. As of March 31st there were 165.6 million VISA "Check Cards" and 69.1 million MasterCard "MasterMoney" cards in-force in the USA, according to CardData (www.carddata.com).
