The number of telephone number registrations in the new "National Do Not Call Registry" has reached 19.8 million. Nine out of ten of the phones numbers registered were processed online. Only 11% were handled via telephone. The "Registry" was launched one week ago. On the first day, the Federal Trade Commission reported that seven million telephone numbers were logged into the system. The FTC projects that 60 million phone numbers may be registered in the "Registry" within the first twelve months. In October, the FTC and the States will begin enforcing the national "do not call" provisions of the Amended TSR. Violators will be subject to a fine of up to $11,000 per incident. Calls from political organizations, solicitation calls on behalf of charities, and calls to conduct surveys, are not covered by the "National Registry" requirements. In addition, companies with which consumers have an established business relationship may call for up to 18 months after the last purchase, payment or delivery, even if the consumer's name is on the "National Do Not Call Registry."
