Diners Club has come out swinging at the new American Express reward cards. Diners says AmEx's point earning schedule is lousy and AmEx lacks flexibility since it has fewer major airline partners. With the new "American Express Rewards Green Card" and "Gold Card," cardholders earn 2 points per $1 charged on certain "everyday" purchases, such as gas and groceries, but it only earns 1 point per $1 charged on all other purchases including travel. Both American Express and Diners Club redeem 2 points for 1 air mile. Therefore, when used for travel purchases, which only earn 1 point, American Express only gives 1/2 mile per $1 charged. Diners Club cardholders earn 2 points for every $1 charged, which equals 1 mile. Diners Club also offers points transfer into frequent flier miles with every major U.S. airline, including United Airlines, and American Airlines, and select international airlines (26 in all) while American Express is still lacking partnerships with several major carriers. Diners Club also says it is the only card that offers a "reverse" opportunity with United Airlines and American Airlines whereby cardholders can transfer their airline frequent flyer miles into "Club Rewards" points.
