Another card swap is underway. This week some Montgomery Ward credit card holders are receiving Wal-Mart credit cards as replacement cards. Montgomery Ward filed bankruptcy in December and immediately shut down its credit card program. GE Capital, which manages both the Montgomery Ward and Wal-Mart store credit card portfolios through its Monogram Credit Card Bank, is handling the card swap. The Wal-Mart cards carry variable APRs ranging from 13.24% to 21.24%, based on credit risk. GE currently manages or owns more than 100 million credit card accounts with approximately $25 billion in receivables, making it the largest issuer of credit cards in the world. This summer Bank of Hawaii VISA cardholders will have their cards swapped with American Express cards.
