Another bank has joined Chase Manhattan in offering debit cards that generate reward points. Ohio-based Charter One Financial has launched a the MegaRewards program to enable all Charter One MasterMoney debit cardholders to earn points toward free merchandise and travel benefits for every non-PIN purchase they make. Under the program, cardholders will earn one point for every dollar they spend on a MasterCard transaction. Points can be redeemed for merchandise and travel on any airline. Customers begin to earn rewards with as few as 1,500 points. Charter One charges a $15 annual fee for its MasterCard debit card which is waived for the first year. However, points earned during the year can be applied toward the annual fee. Chase Manhattan also offers two MasterMoney debit cards with rewards. The Chase/Continental Airlines Banking Card offers one frequent flyer mile for every two dollars spent on debit purchases while the Chase Banking Card with Leisure Rewards offers one point for every one dollar spent on debit purchases.
