American Express has moved into the gift card market with a pilot program in San Diego. Westfield America is testing the new co-branded gift card program at eight Shoppingtowns in California. If successful the program may be expanded nationwide. The new stored-value gift card will replace Westfield's existing gift certificate program. The gift cards will be purchased and reloaded at the Shoppingtowns' Customer Service Centers. The gift card can be used at any merchant that accepts the American Express card. Westfield owns interests in 39 major shopping centers, branded as Westfield Shoppingtowns. The shopping centers are home to approximately 5,048 specialty stores in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Washington.
